Pain Management and Postural Support in Adult Scoliosis

Omurga eğriliği değerlendirmesi yapılan bir seans

In adults, changing the scoliosis angle is no longer the goal. The real target is reducing pain, supporting posture and protecting day-to-day capacity.

For someone who notices a curve in adulthood, or sees one left over from adolescence progressing, the first question is usually: "what can I do now?" The answer differs from childhood and adolescent scoliosis, because once bone growth is complete, the goal itself changes.

Why the angle is no longer the focus

Once growth is complete, a significant reduction in the degree of the spinal curve is not expected. That's a realistic limit and needs to be accepted at the outset of the programme. By contrast, reducing pain, building trunk endurance and supporting posture are entirely achievable goals.

Where the pain comes from in adult scoliosis

Pain usually comes not from the curve itself but from the muscle imbalance and uneven joint loading that develops around it. Muscles on one side are constantly overworked while the other side is underused; over time that imbalance turns into chronic back pain.

What the programme focuses on

Trunk stabilisation, breathing exercises that protect lung capacity, and personalised work to balance shortened and weakened muscle groups form the foundation of the programme. During painful periods, short-term passive methods such as manual therapy can be used as support, but the real, lasting benefit comes from active exercise.

Daily-life adjustments

Staying in the same position for long periods — especially an asymmetric sitting posture — increases pain. Postural awareness, regularly changing position and adjusting the work environment are an integral part of the programme.

When is a physician referral needed?

If the character of the pain changes, if pain or numbness spreading into the leg appears, or if there's a suspicion of rapid progression in the curve, the process is referred to a physician for assessment. The physiotherapy programme complements that medical follow-up rather than replacing it.

A realistic but effective goal

Success in adult scoliosis isn't correcting the spine — it's reducing pain and protecting function. That goal may look more modest, but its effect on day-to-day quality of life is considerable.
