Graston Technique

The Graston technique is a mobilisation method applied to soft tissue — muscle, tendon and fascia — with stainless-steel instruments. In the international literature it falls under IASTM (instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation). Fzt. Kemran Hafız does not use it as a standalone treatment but as one stage aimed at reaching the source of a movement restriction; every session is completed with exercise.

A soft-tissue mobilisation technique applied by hand

When is it needed?

  • Muscle shortening accompanying a neurological condition
  • Tissue stiffness that gets confused with spasticity
  • Suspected adhesion in an area inactive for a long time
  • Tissue shortening that restricts exercise
  • Gained movement closing back up within a few days

What we do

  • Telling spasticity apart from tissue shortening
  • Graston application only in areas where tissue shortening is clearly present
  • Immediate movement work right after application
  • Preserving the gained range of motion with exercise
  • Regular reassessment

Graston Technique in Bursa Nilüfer

Fzt. Kemran Hafız provides one-to-one care for graston technique at the clinic in Bursa Nilüfer — in Fethiye Mahallesi, on Kelebek Sokak, at a central point of Nilüfer, opposite the Fethiye covered market.

It is a short trip by car or public transport from İhsaniye, Odunluk, Balat, Özlüce, Ataevler, 23 Nisan and the surrounding areas. Every session is one-to-one, assessment-based and tailored to you.

Spasticity and shortening aren't the same thing

In neurological conditions, restriction has two separate sources: nerve-driven excessive muscle contraction (spasticity) and genuine tissue shortening that develops over time. The two feel similar to the hand, but they need different treatment; any method applied without making this distinction falls short.

Fzt. Kemran Hafız uses the Graston technique in Bursa Nilüfer only after making this distinction, and only in areas where tissue shortening is clearly present. The application doesn't stand alone — it takes on meaning together with the movement work that follows it immediately; the range of motion gained closes back up within a few days if it isn't put to use.

When and how is Graston used?

Fzt. Kemran Hafız uses Graston only after making this distinction, and only in areas where tissue shortening is clearly present. Is Graston applied for spasticity?

No; the approach for spasticity is different (positioning, a stretching routine, treatment run by the physician). Graston is only used where genuine tissue shortening is clearly present.

Frequently asked questions

Does Graston reduce spasticity?

No, spasticity is a different mechanism and is addressed with a different approach. Graston is only used for genuine tissue shortening.

Is exercise mandatory after the application?

Yes; the range of motion gained closes back up within a few days if it isn't put to use with exercise right afterward.

Which areas is it used on?

In a neurological condition, it's used only on areas where tissue shortening is clearly present and has been distinguished from spasticity.
