Scoliosis and Postural Assessment

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine seen when looking from the front. In most cases the cause is unknown and it is noticed between the ages of 10 and 15, during rapid growth. Fzt. Kemran Hafız carries out postural and spinal assessment and runs the process alongside your orthopaedic doctor.

A physiotherapist assessing spinal alignment and posture

When is it needed?

  • Trunk curvature and sitting imbalance accompanying a neurological condition
  • Fatigue and the need for support increasing with prolonged sitting
  • A sense of reduced breathing capacity
  • Sliding or asymmetric sitting in a wheelchair
  • Trunk stiffness that's more pronounced in the morning

What we do

  • Assessing sitting balance and trunk control
  • Exercises targeting breathing capacity
  • Adjusting seating and support for wheelchair users
  • Complementary exercise for patients wearing a brace
  • Positioning education for family/caregivers

Scoliosis in Bursa Nilüfer

Fzt. Kemran Hafız provides one-to-one care for scoliosis at the clinic in Bursa Nilüfer — in Fethiye Mahallesi, on Kelebek Sokak, at a central point of Nilüfer, opposite the Fethiye covered market.

It is a short trip by car or public transport from İhsaniye, Odunluk, Balat, Özlüce, Ataevler, 23 Nisan and the surrounding areas. Every session is one-to-one, assessment-based and tailored to you.

When the curve is fixed, the goal is preserving function

In scoliosis (spinal curvature) accompanying a neurological condition, the problem isn't only the shape of the spine. Loss of trunk control directly affects sitting, breathing capacity and wheelchair use; looking only at the curve and skipping these areas is a common mistake.

Fzt. Kemran Hafız builds the assessment around sitting balance, trunk control and breathing. The programme doesn't promise to change the degree of the curve; it aims to preserve daily-life function and slow deterioration. If a brace is used, exercise is arranged around it, and physician follow-up continues.

Why does the programme target function, not the angle?

In scoliosis accompanying a neurological condition, changing the degree of the curve through exercise isn't a realistic goal. Fzt. Kemran Hafız therefore defines the goal as preserving sitting balance, breathing capacity and daily-life function; slowing deterioration is part of that goal too.

Why does sitting balance matter so much?

When trunk control weakens, sitting becomes asymmetric, which negatively affects both skin-pressure risk and breathing capacity. Work on sitting balance is especially a priority for patients who use a wheelchair.

What do breathing exercises do?

Trunk curvature can restrict rib-cage expansion. Breathing exercises partly compensate for this restriction and support daily activity capacity.

Frequently asked questions

Does scoliosis improve with exercise in a neurological patient?

A noticeable reduction in the degree of the curve isn't expected; the goal is preserving sitting balance, breathing and daily function.

Can a wheelchair user exercise?

Yes; the programme is adapted to trunk-control and breathing exercises that can be done while seated.

Is exercise continued alongside a brace?

Yes, wearing a brace doesn't replace exercise; the exercise programme continues during the brace period too, to keep trunk muscles from weakening.
