Generic core exercises can fall short in scoliosis. The Schroth approach teaches a three-dimensional correction specific to the exact pattern of each curve.
Many people diagnosed with scoliosis are first told to "strengthen the core." That's a reasonable starting point, but scoliosis isn't simple muscle weakness — it's a three-dimensional curve-and-rotation problem, which is why generic exercise usually falls short. The Schroth approach was developed specifically to fill that gap.
Traditional exercises work the trunk symmetrically. But in a scoliotic spine the two sides are already asymmetric; symmetric exercise can end up strengthening the stronger side further and reinforcing the imbalance. Schroth defines a personalised exercise pattern for each curve's specific type — the number of curves, their direction and their level.
The method aims to correct the spine not only sideways but also along its rotational axis. Specific breathing techniques (rotational angular breathing) help expand the collapsed side of the rib cage while drawing the protruding side back in.
Part of the exercise is "feeling" the corrected posture in a mirror and through tactile feedback. The goal is for the person to maintain that corrected posture automatically in daily life too — the exercise isn't confined to the session.
It's applied in mild-to-moderate curves during growth, as a complement to a brace in patients who wear one, and for pain and postural support in adult scoliosis. The degree of the curve and the risk of progression are assessed by a physician; the exercise approach doesn't replace that medical follow-up — it complements it.
Schroth exercises are complex and take time to learn correctly. While they may not visibly change the spinal angle in the short term, they build lasting improvements in trunk control, breathing capacity and postural awareness — and those are exactly what makes the difference over long-term follow-up.

An exercise-based, one-to-one physiotherapy programme for back pain and pain radiating into the leg.
A programme focused on posture and the deep neck muscles for pain spreading into the neck, shoulder and arm.
For pain travelling from the back into the hip and leg: assessment that identifies the source, then graded exercise.
